Summer 2022 Update

Hello from Sustainable Westchester! We hope you had a great summer. We have a short update for you on several of our programs. The team has been very busy this summer preparing new program offers. It has also been a very hot summer, with two heatwaves and a streak of GridRewards events. We hope you are staying cool and looking forward to the fall months ahead. We have a lot to look forward to: October is National Energy Awareness Month; stay tuned on our social media pages for upcoming posts about energy awareness!

Solar Update

Sustainable Westchester continues to perform outreach with municipalities to discuss the upcoming Solar Credit offering to benefit low to moderate-income residents. The Solar Credit offering is pending approval from the Public Service Commission and will be launched in the fall, and administered under the Westchester Power program, in addition to the current electricity supply offering.

The Public Service Commission and NYSERDA have spent much of the summer working to issue clarity on a number of important topics in the solar industry including (1) a CCA framework and (2) an Inclusive Community Solar Adder proposal, which will shed light on how solar program providers and developers are able to offer benefits on a large scale to those enrolled in solar projects and to low to moderate income individuals specifically.

Sustainable Westchester continues to work with the New York Power Authority to assist municipalities and school districts to vet their sites for solar projects to benefit local residents that enroll as community solar subscribers.

Westchester Power Program Electricity Supply Offer

The Westchester Power Electricity Supply offer in Con Edison territory has been on a temporary hiatus during the summer months, following the expiry of the most recent contract on June 30, 2022. We are pleased to announce that the new supply offer will be available as of November 1, 2022.

This change does not affect Yonkers, which is on a separate contract.

Marketplace conditions driven by global events have resulted in the price of natural gas, the primary driver for the electricity market, to more than triple in the past year and a half. Market volatility and rate uncertainty necessitated a brief pause in the Westchester Power electricity service upon the lapse of the previous contract that expired on June 30, 2022.

A contract has been awarded to Constellation New Energy for a two year term that begins November 1, 2022 and runs until October 31, 2024, with rates as follows:

100% Renewable Supply: 15.128 cents/kWh

Standard Supply: 13.364 cents/kWh

Customers who were previously enrolled in the supply will be automatically re-enrolled for this new contract period. Customers can opt out of the program at any time with no costs or fees, and can elect to change their supply option at any time.

Notification letters will be sent to residents in mid-September and will contain information about the program and instructions for changing the supply options or opting out.

Please see more information on our website at https://sustainablewestchester.org/wp/conedterritory/ including upcoming public information sessions.

Public information sessions will continue to be scheduled into September and October, the details to be posted to our website.

Geothermal Spotlight - Mike and Amy Harnessed the Heat Beneath Their Feet!

Mike and Amy wanted to make their Pelham residence the perfect place to raise their two children – despite the lack of air conditioning, disruptive oil heating system, and improper insulation in the 105-year-old home. When they set out to make upgrades to the historic house, they contacted a Sustainable Westchester partner contractor and quickly discovered how these upgrades could benefit both their home and their wallet. Not only have their heating bills become far more affordable, but their home has also become much more comfortable.

GridRewards:

Last week during that intense heat wave, our Demand Response Program, GridRewards, held the first two demand response events in ConEd territory! Participants were alerted to a specific time slot to lower their energy usage, which lessens stress on the energy grid, presents power outages, and reduces pollution from peaker plants. At the end of the summer GridRewards users can earn cash back for participating!
