National Grid Utility Customers Can Save with Community Solar — No Rooftop Panels Required

Sustainable Westchester is helping expand clean energy access by connecting New York State residents to its Community Solar program. As a Hudson Valley nonprofit working to reduce energy costs, Sustainable Westchester serves as a trusted resource for residents and communities navigating today’s rising electricity prices. To date, the organization has successfully enrolled over 3,000 community solar customers.

Now, National Grid customers have a new opportunity to lower their monthly energy bills up to 15-20% a year—without installing solar panels on their homes. Through Community Solar, residents can subscribe to a local solar project and receive monthly savings on their National Grid electricity bill. The program was created to ensure that all residents—including renters and those whose homes are shaded or otherwise unsuitable for rooftop solar—can benefit from renewable energy.

“Community Solar removes one of the biggest barriers to clean energy — the need to own a home or install rooftop panels,” said Enrique Aguas, Program Manager, Sustainable Westchester. “It gives renters and income-eligible households a practical way to lower their bills while participating in renewable energy.”

How does Community Solar work?

When enrolling, you are assigned a portion of a local solar farm based on your typical energy use. Each month, that portion generates electricity on your behalf. The value of that energy is converted into credits, which are applied directly to yourNational Grid bill.

Community Solar is a state-regulated program, and there is no long-term contract required. Participants may cancel at any time without penalties. Find out more here
