Local governments, community groups, nonprofit organizations, houses of worship, and community-based organizations (CBOs) have a unique opportunity to lead by example in sustainability. By participating in demand response, they can reduce pollution, earn money for their organizations, and inspire their communities to take action on clean energy solutions.
Sustainable Westchester’s demand response program, powered by Logical Buildings, is an impactful tool available to most Con Edison customers. Nonprofits, houses of worship, CBOs, residents, businesses, and more can take part, while municipal buildings and schools with NYPA accounts are also eligible to enroll.
GET INVOLVED
There are two ways to participate and earn money with Sustainable Westchester:
Enroll your building or campus to reduce energy use at key times and get paid.
Launch a campaign to engage your members in a GridRewards Advertising Campaign Fundraiser
ENROLL YOUR BUILDING
Did you know you can earn rewards for lowering your electric use during peak demand periods?
Sign up for ConEd Smart Usage Rewards by connecting with Sustainable Westchester’s Partner, Logical Buildings, who will help you earn money when you use less energy on the hottest days.
When the utility anticipates high demand for energy, you’ll be asked to reduce your electric use by doing things like decreasing your A/C use or avoiding the use of large appliances.
The more times you participate, the more rewards you’ll get!

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT EXAMPLES
There’s so many ways to get involved in helping to spread the word!
MUNICIPALITIES
Video Above: Watch the webinar to hear from Village of Hastings-on-Hudson Mayor Nicola Armacost as she shares how the village enrolled. Plus, David Klatt, COO of Logical Buildings, walks through the step-by-step enrollment process. Since 2022, the Village of Hastings-on-Hudson’s municipal buildings have been active participants, earning thousands of dollars annually.
More than a dozen municipalities in Westchester County participate in the demand response program, a collaboration between Sustainable Westchester and Logical Buildings. By strategically reducing energy use at key times, they earn thousands of dollars annually while also leading by example for their residents and community.
Municipal buildings—including recreation centers, village halls, fire departments, and libraries—are making a meaningful impact. If your municipality isn’t enrolled yet, connect with Lauren@SustainableWestchester.org to start earning and driving positive change!
RIVERTOWN MAYORS

For Earth Month 2023, the Rivertown Mayors from Hastings to Sleepy Hollow engaged in friendly competition; encouraging residents to sign up for Sustainable Westchester’s GridRewards energy reduction program.

NONPROFITS & HOUSES OF WORSHIP
Nonprofits and Houses of Worship can enroll their buildings or campuses to participate in demand response and earn cash by reducing energy at key times. Logical Buildings will notify you when these events occur. The more participation, the more money that can be earned.
Depending on the building size, either GridRewards or SmartKit AI may be a better fit.
With or without enrolling a building, organizations can also promote GridRewards to their membership, staff and congregations as a fundraiser. By using the referral code, an extra $10 is earned by both the organization and person signing up.
A handful of religious institutions in Westchester County have been advertising the program to the members and linked here is a sample flyer. Sustainable Westchester is available to support an advertising campaign and can share digital assets and print materials. Please reach out to Lauren@SustainableWestchester.org for more info!
If your nonprofit is looking for funds for an energy efficiency upgrade, please look into the Renew America’s Nonprofit grant! Sustainable Westchester is accepting applications until May 1, 2025.

COMMUNITY GROUPS
Homeowners Associations, Civic Organizations, PTAs, Lions Clubs, Rotary Clubs, Book Clubs, Junior Leagues and more ! Reach out to get started on your 2025 Earth Month Campaign!
Community Campaigns for Conservation Advisory Council (CAC), Sustainability Groups and other Municipally Appointed Committees
Climate Smart Communities: Climate Smart Communities (CSC) is a New York State program that helps local governments take action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to a changing climate. The program offers grants, rebates for electric vehicles, and free technical assistance.
Sustainability Committees seeking to increase CSC points for their municipality can use GridRewards for “PE9 Action: Energy Reduction Campaign” for 3 Points. If the municipality formally completed CEC (see below), a GridRewards campaign could count under “PE8 Action: Community Campaigns”.
Clean Energy Communities: Sustainable Westchester proudly partnered with 27 municipalities to offer GridRewards demand response campaigns for Clean Energy Communities (CEC) points and funds and special designations. Over the course of three years, 20 municipalities completed community campaigns promoting GridRewards and earned $130,000 in grant funding from NYSERDA for clean energy projects in Westchester. The program is now closed.
