Energy Saving Rewards for Community or Government Buildings

Local governments, community groups, nonprofit organizations, houses of worship, and community-based organizations (CBOs) have a unique opportunity to lead by example in sustainability. By participating in demand response, they can reduce pollution, earn money for their organizations, and inspire their communities to take action on clean energy solutions.

Sustainable Westchester’s demand response program, powered by Logical Buildings, is an impactful tool available to most Con Edison customers. Nonprofits, houses of worship, CBOs, residents, businesses, and more can take part, while municipal buildings and schools with NYPA accounts are also eligible to enroll.

GET INVOLVED

There are two ways to participate and earn money with Sustainable Westchester:

Enroll your Building

Reduce energy use at key times and get paid.

Launch a Campaign

Engage your members in a GridRewards Advertising Campaign Fundraiser.

ENROLL YOUR BUILDING

Did you know you can earn rewards for lowering your electric use during peak demand periods?

Con Edison’s Smart Usage Rewards program offers cash rewards for reducing your electricity usage on the hottest days of the summer. Westchester buildings can use tools developed by Logical Buildings, a Sustainable Westchester partner, to start earning this summer: GridRewards or SmartKit AI. Both of these tools notify you when to lower electricity usage and the more times you participate, the more rewards you’ll get!

MUNICIPALITIES

Video Above: Watch the webinar to hear from Village of Hastings-on-Hudson Mayor Nicola Armacost as she shares how the village enrolled. Plus, David Klatt, COO of Logical Buildings, walks through the step-by-step enrollment process. Since 2022, the Village of Hastings-on-Hudson’s municipal buildings have been active participants, earning thousands of dollars annually.

More than a dozen municipalities in Westchester County participate in the demand response program, GridRewards, a collaboration between Sustainable Westchester and Logical Buildings. They not only earn thousands of dollars by reducing energy annually during critical periods, but also set a strong example for their residents and community.

Municipal buildings—including recreation centers, village halls, fire departments, and libraries—are making a meaningful impact. If your municipality isn’t enrolled yet, connect with us at [email protected] to start earning and driving positive change!

RIVERTOWN MAYORS

For Earth Month 2023, the Rivertown Mayors from Hastings to Sleepy Hollow engaged in friendly competition; encouraging residents to sign up for Sustainable Westchester’s GridRewards energy reduction program.

Community Campaigns for Conservation Advisory Council (CAC), Sustainability Groups and other Municipally Appointed Committees

Climate Smart Communities: Climate Smart Communities (CSC) is a New York State program that helps local governments take action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to a changing climate. The program offers grants, rebates for electric vehicles, and free technical assistance.

Sustainability Committees seeking to increase CSC points for their municipality can use GridRewards for “PE9 Action: Energy Reduction Campaign” for 3 Points. If the municipality formally completed CEC (see below), a GridRewards campaign could count under “PE8 Action: Community Campaigns”.

Clean Energy Communities: Sustainable Westchester proudly partnered with 27 municipalities to offer GridRewards demand response campaigns for Clean Energy Communities (CEC) points and funds and special designations. Over the course of three years, 20 municipalities completed community campaigns promoting GridRewards and earned $130,000 in grant funding from NYSERDA for clean energy projects in Westchester. The program is now closed.

NONPROFITS & HOUSES OF WORSHIP

Nonprofits and Houses of Worship can enroll their buildings or campuses in demand response programs, earning cash by reducing energy during peak times. Logical Buildings will provide notifications for these events, and greater participation leads to increased earnings!

Depending on the building’s size, either GridRewards or SmartKit AI may be a more suitable option.

Organizations can also promote GridRewards as a fundraiser to their members, staff, and congregations, even without enrolling a building. By using a unique referral code, both the organization and the new sign-up receive an extra $10.

Several religious institutions in Westchester County have already promoted the program to their members; here is a sample flyer. Sustainable Westchester offers support for advertising campaigns, including digital assets and print materials. To get started, please contact [email protected].
