Parking Lot Solar Initiative

Sustainable Westchester has launched a bold new initiative we’re calling ‘Black Gold.’ The concept is innovative: install solar canopies over the vast parking lots that dot our region, transforming idle pavement into clean power and energy savings at a time when so many residents and businesses are feeling the squeeze.

Parking lots are some of the most underutilized spaces in America. Black Gold changes that. It generates renewable energy, reduces grid strain, shades vehicles, and creates good-paying jobs — with critical support from Sustainable Westchester.

With the help of our expert team, municipalities and private land owners are turning two-dimensional parking lots into three-dimensional engines of climate action, energy resilience, and community empowerment. This program (which leverages Sustainable Westchester’s local knowledge and deep experience in clean energy projects at scale) reflects a powerful transformation from a negative to a positive. Black asphalt lots contribute to the urban heat island effect. Overtopping them with solar canopies transforms them into Black Gold—a source of clean energy, shade, and climate action.

  • Solar is now the cheapest source of new electricity in most of the United States.
  • In 2025, solar and wind power generated a record 17% of US electricity production.
  • Building out solar with storage would save ratepayers $1 billion per year.

We’ve done the math, and the potential benefits are massive. With Westchester County’s 2,700 acres of viable parking lot sites, we could power one-third of the County’s homes with parking lot solar canopies alone!

That savings sends money back into municipal budgets for infrastructure and tax relief – and it improves the financial picture for nonprofit organizations and private businesses, all while investing in stronger and more sustainable communities. And these projects also help to create other economic benefits, through well-paying jobs and revitalizing downtowns and commercial areas.

Sustainable Westchester operates this program through its 45 municipal members and Westchester County, and we are also available for site consultations and planning with private land owners, including nonprofit organizations and commercial property owners.
