RESIDENTS

What Can We Do?

Electric Vehicles are fun to drive, practical, and cost-effective transportation options for Westchester residents. Their average range is growing, and they are becoming competitive with Internal Combustion Engine cars. Moreover, there are very few moving parts in an EV (around 20), while in ICE cars, that number can reach 2,000. Thus, they tend to fail more often, and maintenance is expensive.

Sustainable Westchester works with municipalities, building owners, and developers to take the lead in public charging infrastructure in order to make the benefits of EVs accessible to a greater percentage of residents. Also, Sustainable Westchester promotes alternative and public transportation, a “complete streets” approach to making our roads accessible to all modes of movement.

The EV Buying Experience

Key Considerations Before Purchasing an Electric Vehicle

Purchasing an electric vehicle should begin with some online research. research. While most OEMs are now offering EVs and have a specialized sales force dedicated to them, some EVs are not sold through dealerships. Online or in a special showroom, purchases are
now available for the new car manufacturers. Make sure to ask to take a test drive.  When reviewing the car’s specifications,  be sure to take into consideration the model’s operating range and how running the heat or air conditioning affects the range. Other items to ask dealerships about include:

  • Pricing/Incentives: Which incentives, rebates, tax credits, dealer discounts, and financing offers are available to lower the cost of purchase? How do I receive these?
  • Insurance:  Are there insurance implications for an electric vehicle?
  • Charging:  How long does it take to recharge the battery from 0% to 100% on a level 2 charger?  Can I install a charging station at my home? What discounts are available for this?
